You won't find Olitaeten in the dictionary, not even a German one! But an old encyclopedia defines them as all kinds of oils, essences and fragrances produced in the Thuringian forest in the 19th century or before, and sold by itinerant pharmacists.

It's a fascinating history, and a lovely area to visit - the Green Heart of Germany. But of course it's not just about walking and history. It's about meeting the people of today also: the herb peoples of the district, the "Lavender Queen", the "witches of the Olitaetenland", the children in the Froebel Kindergarten .......
